Italian conjugation
Italian verbs come in three conjugations by infinitive ending: -are (parlare), -ere (credere) and -ire (dormire). Many -ire verbs insert -isc- in the present singular and third plural (finire → finisco, finiscono).
Italian verb endings chart
Italian is a pro-drop language: the ending already tells you the subject, so io, tu and lui are usually left out. Parlo means “I speak” on its own. That makes the endings on the yellow tiles essential for understanding who is doing what.
Essere or avere?
The passato prossimo uses avere for transitive verbs and essere for most verbs of motion and change of state (andare, venire, partire, nascere, morire), all reflexive verbs and essere itself. With essere the participle agrees: Maria è andata.
Spelling in -care and -gare
Verbs like cercare and pagare add an h before endings starting with e or i, to keep the hard sound: cerchi, paghiamo, cercherò.
Passato remoto
The remote past (parlai, credetti) is common in writing and in southern Italy, while the north prefers the passato prossimo in speech. Learn to recognise it for reading.
